Turner Powertrain

CX28 Transmission

Sand, Gravity, High & Low Pressure Die

Meeting customer requirements in line with volume forecasts

Overview

Early inclusion is always an advantage in meeting the client's overall objectives. This was the case with Turner Transmissions. The client required a prototype supplier with the ability to move directly into production. The brief was to ensure that all the design casting characteristics were established at prototype stage. We had to replicate either gravity, low pressure or high pressure die casting but from the sand cast process.

Working to tight schedules our engineers and designers responded to ongoing client modifications specific to production. After the 2nd phase of prototypes to optimise the design to improve performance and achieve timing, the design was finally frozen. Twenty different tools were made, for production in the UK and China using 3 different processes (gravity, low pressure and high pressure die).

Benefits Summary

At one point there were 78 design changes being incorporated into the component involving designers, engineers and production in America, China and the UK. Key to the success of this project was communication with Alumasc dedicated resource, tracking changes, accommodating meetings, and ensuring customer requirements were fully understood.

The client is now developing the market sector confident that Alumasc can meet predictions for future growth and is already benefiting from our cost down proposals to reduce overall expenditure by changing design and costing processes in line with volume increases.
