Protective clothing checklist

1. Eye protection

  • The standard for the general issue eye protection is EN166 1F
  • EN166 is the base standard for optical protection
  • "1" relates to high optical quality - for extended wear periods
  • "F" relates to low impact resisance, sufficient protection for normal operations

2. Hearing protection

  • The standards for hearing protection are general and apply to all hearing protective equipment acceptable for use in the workplace.
These are EN352.1 for Muffs; EN352.2 for plugs and EN352.3 for helmet mounted muffs

3. Respiratory protection

  • The standards are quite complex as they include solids, liquids and gases; there are also variations such as fume and aerosols to consider. Standards are also different for full-face, half face, air fed etc.. At APC the situation is simplified to mostly particulate and fume - fume is particulate with small particle size.
  • The standard at APC for particulate respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is EN149:2001 FFP2. The level of filtration we should achieve is FFP2 - previously this was FFP1 which requires a lesser standard of filtration

4. Foot protection

  • The standard for safety footwear with 200 joule impact protection, as required by APC, is EN345 SB. This level of protection is sufficient for Machine Shop activities and other areas, excluding the Foundry
  • The Foundry standard for safety footwear requires impact protection and hot metal protection, is EN345 BS4676 1983 SB, P, HRO. This standard includes gaiters for burn protection together with impact protection
